Constipation’s mortal enemy: Water

But Are You Really Drinking Enough Water?

When we say that constipation is not “normal,” that’s not entirely true. The truth is, constipation is far too common in Americans. Another thing that’s typical for Americans? We don’t drink enough water.

Yes, fiber is important for healthy bowel movements (and we’ll cover fiber in an email soon). But if you’re not drinking enough water, it’s all for naught. Eating fiber without drinking water is like using a dried-out sponge to clean out a pan. Doesn’t work that well, does it?

We recommend:

  • Drinking a large glass of water as soon as you get up
  • Sipping water throughout the day, every day
  • Hydrating well between meals but not during meals

If constipation is a problem for you, DRINK MORE WATER. It’s free, it’s delicious and it’s oh so healthy.

How Much Water, Exactly?

Start with drinking roughly half your body weight in ounces. So, if you weigh 140 pounds, drink 70 oz. of water a day.

Remember though, if you’re taking diuretics of any kind (coffee, tea, medication), or sweating a lot, you’ll lose more water—so you’ll need to drink even more.
