Sometimes, we get so caught up in the rules of these \u201creligions\u201d or diets that we forget to check in with our own bodies. What do we need or want at a particular meal or on a specific day?<\/p><p>Personally, I\u2019ve tried it all\u2014vegetarian, pescatarian, low-fat, low-calorie, Atkins, raw vegan (briefly), macrobiotic, low-carb, paleo\u2014and I even made up a few of my own in college. The driver behind all these diet shifts? Weight loss. I was desperate to find the mecca for weight loss.<\/p><p>None of these attempts left me empty-handed, though. Each one taught me something valuable about what works for my body and what doesn\u2019t.<\/p><p><strong>My New Approach to Eating<\/strong><\/p><p>These days, my \u201creligion\u201d is more about tuning into my own body, cravings, and trusting myself. I know what hurts my body and what nourishes it\u2014and I also know that these needs can change.<\/p><p><strong>My Challenge to You<\/strong><\/p><p>I challenge you to set aside your food religion for a moment and really feel what your unique body needs more of. Is it vegetables, meat, fruit, fat, grains? Instead of jumping to a new diet, just try eating a little more of what\u2019s missing from your diet.<\/p><p>For example, I recently realized I\u2019d been missing whole grains, so I\u2019ve re-fallen in love with steel-cut oats in the morning. I\u2019ve also discovered that I don\u2019t need as much meat as I once thought.
