The <strong>American Dairy Council<\/strong> feeds this paranoia, promoting daily consumption of dairy products. However, entire nations exist where people consume no dairy at all, yet experience <strong>fewer bone-density-related fractures<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>The Calcium Myth<\/h3><p>Yes, <strong>we need calcium<\/strong>\u2014but the path to high bone density and flexibility is far more complex than simply drinking milk or focusing on one mineral. Studies repeatedly show that <strong>higher calcium intake alone<\/strong> does not benefit bones in the long term. Shocking, right?<br \/><br \/><\/p><h4>The Role of Collagen<\/h4><p>Bones need to be <strong>both dense and flexible<\/strong> to avoid fractures. Collagen protein forms the flexible matrix that provides structure for mineralization. As we age, our ability to digest protein diminishes, making us more vulnerable to fractures. Poor digestion of protein is often linked to <strong>insufficient stomach acid<\/strong>, causing symptoms such as:<br \/><br \/><\/p><ul><li>Post-meal belching<\/li><li>Indigestion<\/li><li>Acid reflux<\/li><li>Upper GI bloating<\/li><li>Early sense of fullness<br \/><br \/><\/li><\/ul><h3>Hormones and Bone Health<\/h3><p><strong>Hormone balance<\/strong> (especially for women) is crucial for bone health. During menopause, <strong>estrogen levels drop<\/strong>, impairing bone tissue retention. Even more critical is <strong>progesterone<\/strong>, which controls new bone tissue synthesis. Many women experience <strong>low progesterone levels<\/strong> due to stressful lifestyles, exacerbating bone health issues.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>More Than Just Calcium<\/h3><p>Strong bones require more than calcium alone\u2014they need a <strong>rich mix of minerals<\/strong> including:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Magnesium<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Boron<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Strontium<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Manganese<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Phosphorus<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Copper<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Zinc<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Additionally, <strong>Vitamin D<\/strong> is necessary for absorbing calcium into the bloodstream, while <strong>Vitamin K<\/strong> helps lock that calcium into bone tissue. Without these, calcium may stray to dangerous places like the kidneys (leading to stones) or arteries (contributing to plaque).<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>Calcium and Cardiovascular Disease Risk<\/h3><p>In the past decade, there has been growing acknowledgment of the connection between <strong>calcium supplements<\/strong> and <strong>cardiovascular disease risk<\/strong>. Sadly, the complexity of bone health often gets overlooked in popular media.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>The Bigger Picture<\/h3><p>Given our culture&#8217;s obsession with dairy, most people do not suffer from calcium deficiency. In fact, many women <strong>over-consume calcium<\/strong>, primarily through supplements. In my practice, I encourage clients to find <strong>food-based sources of calcium<\/strong> and typically <strong>do not recommend supplements<\/strong> unless they have:<br \/><br \/><\/p><ul><li>A highly limited diet<\/li><li>Advanced osteopenia<\/li><li>A history of fractures<\/li><li>Confirmed osteoporosis<br \/><br \/><\/li><\/ul><p>According to <strong>Dr. Walter Willet<\/strong> from Harvard University\u2019s School of Public Health, the ideal calcium intake for healthy adults is <strong>around 700mg per day<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-574621d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"574621d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5e11fd8\" data-id=\"5e11fd8\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4ad606 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b4ad606\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>If you do need calcium supplementation, what kind is good for your health?<\/h3><p>It&#8217;s important to choose a form of calcium that is easily absorbed and utilized in bone tissue.
