Consider the following when assessing your stool to discuss with your practitioner.<\/span><br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Color<\/strong><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Medium\/dark brown: <\/b>typically reflects food that has been broken down well<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Green: <\/b>possible low stomach acid; lots of green foods in the diet that aren\u2019t digesting well<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Red-tinged: <\/b>on the outside only, may be hemorrhoids; mixed through may indicate internal bleeding; pigment from red beets may also temporarily turn stool reddish<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Black: <\/b>possible blood in stool and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, considered a medical emergency; charcoal may also temporarily turn stool black (not emergency)<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Tan\/lighter brown\/yellowish: <\/b>bile may not be releasing well into the stool, excess consumption of orange pigmented foods, possible maldigested\/malabsorbed fat in stool<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>White\/gray: <\/b>bile may be blocked; this is considered a medical emergency.<br \/><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Speed of Bowel Movement<\/strong><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">How long it takes to move the bowels is something to pay attention to &#8211; not urgent, not strained, but easy to pass. Pooping shouldn&#8217;t require lengthy restroom breaks.<\/span><br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Floating\/Sticking\/Sinking<\/strong><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">While floating stools may be considered suspect for fat malabsorption, they must first be given about 2 minutes of <span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt;\">toilet time to absorb water <\/span>into the fiber contained in your stool. At this point they may indeed sink. Another way to assess for fat malabsorption is to see if the stool sticks to the toilet bowl after flushing &#8211; this may suggest attention needs to be paid to fat digestion.<\/span><br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Odor<\/strong><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Stool may have a distinct odor (probably not roses), but strong and foul smelling stool can indicate a problem. Some \u201coff\u201d smells to consider include: swampy smelling (like those flowers that sat in the vase for too long), sulfurous, vinegary, or otherwise putrid. This may be caused by microbial dysbiosis, poor movement in the digestive tract, or other causes.<\/span><br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Consistency and Shape<\/strong><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Thickness and shape of the stool can also be considered &#8211; pencil-like can suggest faster transit time (how long it takes for food to pass from mouth to anus), while too-wide-to-comfortably-pass can indicate stools may not be moving regularly enough. <\/span><\/h5><h5 class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"line-height: 103%; margin: 13.35pt 0cm .0001pt 5.0pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happybellyhealth.com\/hbh-staging\/bowel-transit-time-test-handout\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Please refer to the Testing Transit Time post for more information.<\/span><\/a><\/h5><h5 class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"line-height: 103%; margin: 13.35pt 0cm .0001pt 5.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Small, invisible amounts of mucus in the stool are normal, however, regular, large amounts of passing mucus may indicate inflammation in the gut. See next page for the Bristol Stool Chart.<br \/><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Quantity<\/strong><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Typically, an adult will pass about an arm\u2019s length of solidly formed stool daily.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><b><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">A<\/span><\/b><b> <\/b><b><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">Note<\/span><\/b><b> <\/b><b>On Infants\u2019 Stool<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Exclusively breastfed infants will stool more frequently than those that are being fed formula or solids, which slows down transit time. However, even exclusively breastfed babies should be stooling daily, and for newborns, it is normal to stool after each feed. Exclusively breastfed infants do not \u201cuse up all the breastmilk and so have nothing to expel,\u201d as stool is not only comprised of unabsorbable food remnants, but also a mix of bacteria, toxins,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">inorganic minerals, and dead cells. Infant stool is typically the texture of peanut butter, with or without seeds. It is often yellow, though may be tinged green or orange depending on mom\u2019s diet and food reactions.<\/span><\/h5><\/div><h5 class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"line-height: 103%; margin: 13.35pt 0cm .0001pt 5.0pt;\"><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">A <b>Bristol Stool Chart <\/b>is a standardized tool used to determine the consistency of a stool: whether a stool is \u201cnormal\u201d or tends towards looser or more constipated. Since this tool is standardized, it\u2019s understood amongst practitioners-in-the-know what a certain number means. <\/span><\/h5><h5 class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"line-height: 103%; margin: 13.35pt 0cm .0001pt 5.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">On the Bristol, types 3 and 4 are considered \u201cnormal\u201d (and some practitioners also consider 5 as normal). <\/span><\/h5><h5 class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"line-height: 103%; margin: 13.35pt 0cm .0001pt 5.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happybellyhealth.com\/hbh-staging\/curing-constipation\/\">Constipation<\/a> can be considered type 1 or 2 on the Bristol; additionally, constipated can be viewed by some practitioners as fewer than one bowel movement per day, including in babies. <\/span><\/h5><h5 class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"line-height: 103%; margin: 13.35pt 0cm .0001pt 5.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Looser stools are 5 or 6 on the Bristol, with 7 as diarrhea, which may also present as three or more very watery stools per day. <\/span><\/h5><h5 class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"line-height: 103%; margin: 13.35pt 0cm .0001pt 5.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Clarify with your provider if you\u2019re experiencing diarrhea or a tendency towards <span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt;\">looser stools that is less frequent than diarrhea. <\/span><\/span><\/h5><h5 class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"line-height: 103%; margin: 13.35pt 0cm .0001pt 5.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt;\">An individual may fluctuate <\/span>between various stool compositions, such as in a small intestinal microbial overgrowth dynamic, or typically produce consistent stools daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/h5><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9c819a8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9c819a8\"
