Be sure to consider obvious sources (e.g. milk) as well as hidden, common sources where you will need to read food labels. <strong>The following is a list of things to avoid completely:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><p><\/p>\n<li>Milk, Cream, Half-and-Half (includes even a little bit in tea or coffee) Butter\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Yogurt or Kefir Sour Cream\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Creamy salad dressings (e.g. blue cheese, ranch, Thousand Island) and many others containing cheese\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><p><\/p>\n<li>Use vinaigrette (e.g. oil and vinegar) alternatives\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Creamy sauces (that a restaurant may put on fish, chicken, steak, or other foods)Ask for just olive oil and lemon on things like chicken or fish.\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Creamy soups or chowders\n<br><br><ul>\n<li>Focus instead on broth-based ones that don\u2019t include cheese of any kind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><p><\/p>\n<li>If you\u2019re uncertain at a restaurant, *ask* if it\u2019s dairy-free or not.\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Cottage cheese and cream cheese\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Most muffins, scones, cookies, cake\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Definitely Puddings, Custard and related desserts (cr\u00e8me brulee, key lime pie, lemon meringue pie)\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Nougat (in most candy bars)\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Ice cream\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>All cheeses (includes those from cow or goat milk).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><p><\/p>\n<li>Be mindful of where cheese may lurk in common American dishes (e.g. pizza, lasagna, spaghetti, tacos, chips, meatballs)\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Restaurant dishes or processed foods that might surprise you (e.g. meatloaf, scrambled eggs, sauces, soups, hot dogs, doughnuts, pastries, pancakes, mashed potatoes, chocolate)\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Though commonly confused with dairy foods, the following are fine to eat for dairy elimination: <\/strong>Eggs and all egg derivatives, Ghee (clarified and filtered butter), Cocoa Butter\/Powder, coconut foods including \u2018cream of coconut\u2019, cream of tartar, malt liquor, malt vinegar, malted barley, shea butter, all nut butters, and some calcium additives (Calcium Propionate, Carbonate, Citrate, or Phosphate).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>In general, avoid any processed food ingredient that includes the words milk, butter, whey, casein, or lacto- in any way. <\/strong>Many foods use preservatives or additives for texture that include dairy. This means you will need to avoid most baked goods unless they are specifically labeled dairy-free.&nbsp;<\/p><p>To help you be diligent in your elimination, here are some particular ingredients to be sure to avoid:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Ammonium Caseinate Calcium Caseinate Casein Caseinate (in general) Curds<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Delactosed Whey Demineralized Whey Goat Milk Hydrolyzed Casein<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Hydrolyzed Milk Protein Iron Caseinate Potassium Caseinate Recaldent<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Rennet Casein Sodium Caseinate<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Whey (Powder, Protein Concentrate, Protein Hydrolysate)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Zinc Caseinate Lactulose<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Magnesium Caseinate Malted Milk Lactalbumin Lactoferrin Lactoglobulin<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Lactose<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When learning how to remove dairy from your diet, also <strong>be sure to include non-dairy calcium sources <\/strong>in the diet to compensate.
