How to lubricate your GI-tract

A plate of tuna and salad. The food you eat can help lubricate your GI tract.

Little Changes, Big Difference

You’ve probably heard that eating more fiber helps with constipation. That’s certainly true, and will be the focus of the next email in this series. But before you go fiber-wild, we recommend making some preliminary shifts to your diet that will set the stage for a happy belly so you don’t shock your system with all the fiber at once.

It’s going to sound contrary, but trust us here. The first step to gut health is to eat more fats. Healthy fats, that is.

We’re talking:

  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Avocadoes
  • Wild salmon
  • Walnuts
  • Almonds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Eggs
  • Ground flaxseed — great in smoothies or sprinkled on a salad!

Healthy fats are full of nutrition and will start to lubricate your pipes to move the stool along.

In an Emergency

When you’re really constipated, whisk ¼ to ½ a cup of extra-virgin olive oil with some lemon or orange juice and chug it first thing in the morning and just before you go to bed.
